Kathy Siegenthaler

April 2017 KSSN Spotlight

For the month of April, we are spotlighting Kathy Siegenthaler, site team clinician at Burton Elementary. Kathy, who has worked for Arbor Circle for 20 years, has been a KSSN site team clinician for almost seven years—six years at Southwest Community Campus, and now at Burton Elementary. Kathy provides home-based and outpatient therapy, and case management interventions for students and their families. She helps to address a wide range of concerns, including school-related behavior, and individual and family stress due to immigration issues, domestic violence, illness, etc. She also consults and collaborates with teachers, provides facilitation for student and parent support groups, and assists with, and leads, school events.

When asked to describe her favorite part of the job, Kathy says it is being a part of a community-school team that really inspires her. She is encouraged every day by the perseverance, resilience, and talents of her students and their families, and of the creativity and passion of teachers and staff as they help families find ways to overcome challenges.

Kathy knows her work is making a difference when she sees students and teachers coming to her office to find support and a listening ear. Students sometimes demonstrate increased confidence and focus, which translates to higher attendance or greater academic success.  Sometimes successes are evidenced by a smile on a formerly sad face, in the joy of a student being able to finally go out for recess without getting into a fight, or by discovering the possibilities of going to the library without fears of being unwelcomed or confronted with immigration harassment.

When Kathy is not busy at Burton, you may find her playing music with friends (she plays several instruments, including the cello and piano). You can also find her bicycling, swimming, hiking, coordinating Spanish/Culture Immersion Camp at Circle Pines Center, traveling to cities and small villages around the world, hanging out with family and friends, and fighting/organizing for more just, inclusive, and safe communities.

We are proud to feature Kathy Siegenthaler as our KSSN Spotlight. She is a tireless champion for students and families, and we admire her dedication and heart. Thank you for all that you do, Kathy!
