January 2017 KSSN Spotlight
For the month of January, we are shining a bright spotlight on Lamont R. Cole, the Director of Strategic Initiatives & Education at the Grand Rapids Urban League, and one of KSSN’s valued community partners.
Lamont has been with the Grand Rapids Urban League for two years. As the Director of Strategic Initiatives & Education, he convenes strategic initiatives partners and leads the Urban League’s education team. The education team's primary functions include teaching parent leadership courses and running the Parent Opportunity Line, which provides parental support on a multitude of school topics. In short, Lamont and the Grand Rapids Urban League help parents from all schools and districts within Kent County understand “not if their child is smart, but how their child is smart.”
Lamont is a very busy guy. When he’s not at the Grand Rapids Urban League, you might find him engaging in a number of boards and associations. To name just a few, he is Vice President of the Grand Rapids NAACP, is a member of Downtown GR Inc’s Alliance for Livability Committee, and is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is also a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work and at Davenport University’s Masters of Urban Education program. And on those rare occasions when Lamont has free time on his hands, he dabbles in mixology, arts and crafts, and photography.
Lamont’s work, in addition to the other programming at the Grand Rapids Urban League, is impacting the landscape of education in West Michigan by showing parents how to effectively advocate for their child’s academic success. Because of this, combined with Lamont’s commitment to his family and his passion for issues like equity and opportunity for all in our community, we proudly name Lamont Cole our January Spotlight.
